He died of a heart attack in Bodrum, a popular tourist destination in southwest Turkish Riviera, where he was on vacation.[1][2][3] He was incumbent for a relatively short period, beginning on February 14, 2008 until his death on July 5, 2008.

He was married to Aysel Doğan, who accompanied him whilst Euro 2008. He had two children, Zeynep and Selim.[4] The way Hasan Doğan cheered up after Turkey's goals in the Euro 2008 cup by hugging his wife has gained broad public sympathy.
